  <common-name>Potassium hexachloro-palladate(IV)</common-name>
<description>Potassium hexachloro-palladate(IV) is an exogenous inorganic compound with the formula Cl6K2Pd and an average molecular weight of 397.33 g/mol. At room temperature, this compound exists as a solid. Potassium hexachloro-palladate(IV) belongs to the alkali metal chlorides, a subclass of alkali metal salts within the inorganic compounds. It is classified as a mixed metal/non-metal compound.

The compound is found in or released from one recorded source: fermentation processes for beer used in food, food processing, and cookware. Potassium hexachloro-palladate(IV) interacts with four recorded protein targets. It inhibits creatine kinase M-type (CKM) by forming a complex with its essential SH groups. Additionally, it irreversibly inhibits transmembrane prolyl 4-hydroxylase (P4HTM), prolyl 4-hydroxylase subunit alpha-1 (P4HA1), and prolyl 4-hydroxylase subunit alpha-2 (P4HA2) by replacing Fe2+ in the active site to form a strong complex with the enzyme.</description>

<mechanism-of-toxicity>Due to their ability to form strong complexes with both inorganic and organic ligands, palladium ions can disturb cellular equilibria, replace other essential ions, and interact with functional groups of macromolecules, such as proteins or DNA. Palladium complexes binding to DNA and RNA leads to strand breakage. Palladium ions are able to inhibit most major cellular functions, including DNA and RNA synthesis. Palladium compounds have been shown to bind to and inhibit various enzymes, including creatine kinase and prolyl hydroxylase. (L798)</mechanism-of-toxicity>
<metabolism>Palladium may be absorbed through oral, dermal, and inhalation exposure. Once in the body it distributes to the kidney, liver, spleen, lymph nodes, adrenal gland, lung and bone. Palladium's ability to form complexes allows it the bind to amino acids, proteins, DNA, and other macromolecules. Palladium and its metabolites are excreted in the urine and faeces. <health-effects>Contact with palladium may cause palladium sensitivity and allergy. Animal studies have shown that palladium may damage the liver and kidney. (L798)</health-effects>
